Centring Community Care as LGBT+ Disabled People of Colour
Overview
This online discussion series is by and for LGBT+ Black people and people of colour who self-identify as D/deaf, disabled, sick, and/or neurodivergent. Our focus will be on forging community, creating access intimacy and safer spaces together. We'll gently invite witnessing our vulnerability, learning to celebrate & reclaim our power, and envisioning spaces where our bodies can be cared for, experience joy, and thrive!
Session 1: Forging Spaces of Care
Our first session will be a gentle opportunity to introduce ourselves and begin to share our access needs through the framework of Access Intimacy envisioned by Mia Mingus.
Wednesday 11th January 2023, 6:30-8:30pm (GMT)
Session 2: Reclaiming our Vulnerability and Celebrating our Power
Our second session will touch more deeply on intersecting experiences of marginalisation. From these discussions and using inspiration from Audre Lorde’s work we’ll move into creativity using the prompt: 'what space(s) do we envision where our disabled bodies can be tenderly cared for, experience joy and thrive? '
Please bring any art or writing materials that you would like to use. You may also wish to bring art, music or poetry to share that inspires you.
Wednesday 15th February 2023, 6:30-8:30pm (GMT)
Session 3: Navigating Friendships & Relationships
Our third session offers space to discuss the sticky points of being in relationship to friends, family, loved ones and community as disabled people of colour. We’ll build upon our previous discussions of exclusion and forging connections to see how we can actively implement the relationships we want to have with ourselves, each other and the people in our lives.
Wednesday 15th March 2023, 6:30-8:30pm (GMT)
These sessions were envisioned by Sage M Stephanou and co-created and co-facilitated with Suriya Aisha, with funding from the LGBT+ Futures: Equity Fund.
